From previous experiance the best places to stop over in Malta are Slima and Buggiba. Unless you are used to very hot weather! I would avoid going in July and August as it is a killer!

Didnt the Government pass a law preventing the export of old British cars? I seem to remember my Aunty telling me that before this law, a lot of Brits used to come over and snap up low mileage, rust free Mk1 Cortinas, Anglias, Crestas, you name it!

Malta is lovely (I'm biased cos my wife's half-Maltese) and there are some great cars still running around over there. It's like being transported back to the 1960s. I love your pics, maybe you can put some other cars up in Non-Transit Talk?

As Malta in in the EU, I can't see how they could stop you driving out. Or failing that take off the number plates and the VIN plate and take the 'scrap' out on a recovery truck....

Once we're in EU many things have changed. What i sure know is that there is a law that says vehicles over a certain age can't leave the island, i remember about 15 years ago it was 30 years, as an english guy came to Malta and bought 10 MK1 e-types convertibles for less than Lm10,000 each,so the government stoped it as they said its national heritage. now the only 2 are recent imports from UK.
About the wheel trims there very popular, there polished alluminium and buy them from car acsserories shops, they even do trucks and bus sizes.

You have lost me. Is Malta not in the EU then? Sorry I thought it was. Having crossed many EU borders without so much as a second look (in a UK registered van) I bet it wouldn't be so hard to get a van out.

YES we are in the EU, but we do not bennefit like other members of the EU. I cannot buy a van from the UK secondhand and bring it here without paying registration tax. Since we re in EU,duty is not paid anymore but registrtion tax [for the number plates ] from Lm15 it came to Lm1700 [It replaced the duty ]. Top Brass said this has be because all maltese would buy cars from other EU countries.

Well I hate to say this, but
1, that's not fair
and
2, Even the dealerships buy thier cars from other EU countries as, correct me if I am wrong, you don't make cars on Malta!

This Transit belive it or not started life as a Mk1 double wheel LWB, and the owner modifided it into single wheel and changed the front to a Mk2. You can see still the Mk1 dutchboard infront of steering wheel. Below.
