This is Kieth's van, actually a Mk1 with a Mk2 front end, one of the first vans I ever saw with this mod. Since exported to Africa, I believe. Am I right Phil? I beleive we used to call her the conservatory, cos of the roof windows!

a series

Postby Knightrider » Sat Aug 06, 2005 12:59 pm

As far as I can remember ! A series had transit cab but with side steps under doors and yes it was wider but that was by the wings being bigger but I'm pretty sure bonnet was narrower than transit because wings were wider both ways sticking out and coming further into centre looked quite american to me. Drove a 1979 3.0v6 car transporter once had long chassis on them don't recall seeing one on the road for years ,has anyone? I can remember Keith's when it had old diesel Mk1 front and was bright yellow with some stripes someone must have a picture to put on to compare

Yes, the A series has a lot in common with the Mk1, not to mention being what I call a try out for the Mk2 styling. Doors, screen and bonnet are all the same. Our mechanic has a recovery A series that hasn't moved in years, anybody want to save it?

I had an A series about 12 years ago, it was powered by an essex & had the good ol' harvey frost out back, american wrecker styleee, big old beast that was, long gone now & hadn't seen one on the road for years until I passed one a couple of times recently parked up at side of road not far from Lewes, possibly still in use as a recovery unit. You're right about the bonnet, funny little flap, considering the overall size of the A, when compared to the transits (I wish I had some photo's to hand but they probably long lost/gone now too)
