The "off road" transit.... ???

I bought a Transit SWB 2.5L semi high a couple of years ago and LOVE driving it. I recently bought a caravan as a bit of an outdoors freak (see sig) ... Until I get off road and the UK weather's been its usual self!

I tow a 12 foot Monza caravan with it, but the problem is with the Transit itself once it is unhooked - it simply won't grip in wet grass. I have been towed off four sites in the past and the only advice I have received so far is to use all season tyres on the drive wheels (rear). The van is only lightly loaded, although I have experimented with using paving slabs - just makes it worse!

Are there any other tips/tricks solutions out there? Bear in mind please this is not a case of a bit of trouble, but getting totally stuck! (despite easy start off and handbrake/diff trick).

Ive experianced similar problems with my camper, but weve always been able to get enough people to push us out!!!

But i was considering buying a set of snow chains - you can get them quite cheep now we dont get much snow anymore!! I know there a hassle to fit but when your stuck its worth it!!!

The best advice I can give you is to get yourself a 12volt compressor, and once the caravan is unhooked let the pressure down on your tyres if you do get into trouble and get stuck let some more pressure out of the drive wheels.

I have done alot of off roading over the years and have only got stuck and needed to be towed out the once, but I had sunk over the axels!

If you thread rope through the holes in the wheels round and round the rear tyres and then tie it it to the wheel using two of the holes it will grip well . then just cut it off when you are out. About 8-10 mm rope or largest that will go through holes and thread passed the brake drums. Mike

this is a problem ,i had the same last year mind you we all got stuck so it was everbody push everybody out !

It happens in me recovery (no weight over the rear axle when empty) i just let the tyres down till i can move it then pump em up again after (takes ages with 4 rear wheels though )
You could keep an eye out for an LSD, some ambulance had em (usually scottish ones

An old trick (well why not,I'm old) is to cut a couple of lengths of heavy carpet,about a couple of foot wide and as long as the distance between front and back wheels plus a couple of bits of rope and roll them up and store them somewhere.When you get stuck roll them out in front of the back wheels tucking them under rear wheels as best you can.Tie the string to the back bumper and the carpet so when you do get going they drag behind (saves going back for them when you reach terra firma) and off you go.You can of course wash the carpet bits and re-use them.

Another candidate for a winch! If no trees around just dig a trench and throw the spare wheel in and tie the cable to the wheel and drag yourself out. Sounds like a bit of an overkill tho. Good to be self sufficient. Hate asking for help.
