Postby Aztran » Thu Nov 17, 2005 10:57 am

Marnin,

Any ideas?

I could be wrong but think that's fairly normal, just any water settling down that's not been returned to tank. I'm sure someone who knows more than me will tell you if it's anything other than that.

Hi,
my 2.5 di also does this, always has.
Don't think it's a problem.

My money is on the noise being the oil from the top end of the engine falling back to the sump.

Sometimes you become a little paranoid after doing a job yourself and you look and listen a little too hard :)

Sounds to me like 'Air' is the system !

When the engine is hot, release a jubilee clip slightly at the highest point of the engine, you should hear air leaking out. You may have to manoevre the hose slightly to break the seal. Once it stops hissing, and water comes out, thats it bled. Just tighten it up again !

Correct !!!

(IMO)

Although breaking the system to bleed should hopefully be uneccesary. Fill the expansion tank right up to the top and give the engine a few revs. the air bubbles should come right out then. If you have constant air bubbles then take a deep breath and say... 'head gasket'

(IMO) i aint schumakers mechanic !!!!

I'd doubt it being air in the cooling system tbh.

Both the raiadtor and the thermostat housing have degass pipes going back to the expansion tank, so trapped air shouldn't be a problem. If it was air in the system on a regular basis (i.e every shutdown) you'd notice excessive pressure in the expansion tank and most probably overheating too.

If your close enough to the sump on a di engine you will hear the oil dropping back after the engine has shut down.
