Banana timing belt.

Postby Boycie » Thu Nov 17, 2005 6:10 pm

Hey guys.

I need to change the belt on my Di as I don't know when it was last done

Anyway, I apparently need to know if it's "the wide belt or the narrow one". Is there a way I can tell without stripping it down first?

Also, how do you remove the viscous fan and where are the timing marks?

Cheers,
Boyce :)

There's a locking pin that goes on the pump and another on the flywheel, I would always get the cam belt from Ford as that way it comes with a new tenstioner, if you give them the reg they will no which one to give you!

Thanks for that mate,
unfortunately my van has a different engine fitted out of a later Transit! Perhaps I can give them the engine number.

Any marks for the camshaft, or can you put a pin through that too?

the belts were changed in 1992.before 92the belts tooth are 2.5mm after 92 they are 3.5mm(according to haynes)I have always quoted the engine number to a ford dealer and they can tell you the age of the engine.and what belt and tensioner you need.

There is also a change around 9/97 from memory where the belt is just over 1mm wider.

Safest bet is get both and take one back for a credit once you've stripped the old one off.

As mike said, the option to buy the Cambelt care package which includes a replacement auto tensioner to replace the fixed item is the way to go.

Best and quickest way to get the viscous off is also the most brutal looking!!!

Use a big hammer and a long bar, and smack the fecker on the edge of one of the flats.

Timing is all done with pins

a thick pin in the flywheel, just below the fuel filter...roughly 13mm
a choice of two pins for the pump depending on cav or bosch pump
a pin in the camshaft drive gear...thats about 7mm or there abouts.

I'll dig my pins out tomorrow and get exact measurements for you.

he's only right tha knows... think the camshaft wheel is a 3/8 drill bit and the pump either 1/4 or 5/16... dont worry i have the proper kit too.
