2.5 DI engine codes / compatibility

Postby Arca_MK2 » Wed Oct 09, 2019 7:06 am

After my engine is gone, I need a substitute.

My MK2 is an 84 model with the 2.5 DI engine that got the brutal power of 68 horses.
Now it is not easy to find an engine with the same engine code: 4AB
But there are a lot of 4DA banana engines available in Germany.
I found a reasonable one, but the dealer said it won´t fit.

Now the question nobody could answer yet:

If I just take the engine block and cylinder head of a 4DA engine, will all the parts ( front plate, manifolds, fuel injectors ) from my 4AB engine fit?

Thank you in advance.

The di engines are pretty much all the same with regard to fitting 4ab is 68hp from 1983 - 1988, 4da is 80hp from 1991 -1994
so if the 4da engine is a good one then it would be easier to fit it complete as its a bigger engine.

The problem: the 80hp engine was never built in that vehicle. Due to I got a historical registration, it makes it almost impossible to get it registered with an 80 hp engine. The restrictions in Germany are very strict.

But thanks a lot!!!
This will help me to find an engine.

So what hp engines are you allowed to use?

or are you restricted to fitting a 4AB?

If you do not want to spend a lot of money on an assessment of exhaust emissions and driving behavior, you have to take the 4AB. But if you fit the 4DA, it can happen that they withdraw the registration as a historical vehicle. This registration saves you a lot of money on road taxes ( 192,-€ instead of 940,- €/ year ).

If I take the 4DA and attach the parts of the 4AB engine, no one will check the code because it looks like the 4AB.

How would they know if you fitted the whole engine, rather than the head and block :?: :? The engine number will be different anyway, as it's stamped on the block :)

They will have to really know their transit engines to be able to tell two DI engines apart

I am always surprised by what they know about different cars. Cheating engineers is really hard to do.

The engine itself always looks the same. But the manifolds, vacuum pump, fan, and even the cylinder head cover are different (e.g. the intake manifold of the banana is very noticeable). By using the parts from the 4AB engine, no one will check the engine code. On the other side, I want to keep the car optically in the original condition anyway.

Coincident, but it happened: the engineer who examined my vehicle for historical registration has learned auto mechanics at Ford.
