PSV brake code calculator

Postby calummac267 » Mon Feb 22, 2021 9:44 pm

Hi all,

I have tried to contact the dealership and Ford themselves but have had no luck! Hoping my queries can be answered on this forum!

I have purchased a 17 seater Ford transit minibus (registered October 2020). As part of my job, I am required to apply for a VOSA test. In order to apply, I first need to fill out a VTP788 form which requires a 'Brake Code' - the form directs you to an excel document downloaded off Google, (Google 'Brake code calculator - directed to an excel workbook) which when all questions are answered, automatically works out the brake code I need for the form.

The questions I am having issues determining are;

1. What secondary brake system (in terms of axles) did the manufacturer designate when the vehicle was approved?
2. Which axels (if any) did the manufacturer specify as a separate secondary system?
3. Which axles is the parking brake fitted on?

The attachment below provides answers in a drop down menu to choose from - but I have no idea what the correct answers are?!

I would be extremely appreciative of any advice on this as I am at my wits end!!

I can't attach a file of the excel document or a link to direct you to it. But it is the first hit (Gov.UK) when googling 'Brake code calculator'

Thanks in advance!!

Standard transits have 2 axles, front and rear, the front axle isn't an axle as such but has standard hydraulic disk brakes fitted. The rear axle also has standard hydraulic disk brakes fitted.
The handbrake is cable operated to the rear axle.

The hydraulic brakes I believe work diagonally so if 1 side fails you have front and rear brakes still.
Unless the fluid was lost I'm guessing. The brake system is a tandem boost system which I'm not sure about, maybe it varies depending on the load of the vehicle.

If you can clarify what secondary brake system means.

But there's primary brake system only to all 4 wheels or both axles and if secondary simply means another brake then there's only the handbrake and that is only on axle 2.

That's as far as I know anyway, you should probably contact Ford or dvsa to get actual confirmation.

No what I’m saying is if the do minibus’s they will probably know the coeds if they are testing them .when my ex minibus went for its first mot as a camper all they did was look at the logbook and do the test if I was still at work I could have found out as I used to take them for a test but all we got from the office was the paperwork so just handed it tester .
