Head Gasket??????

Postby throbley » Wed Apr 14, 2021 11:47 pm

Last week i was driving home after a 200 mile journey and as you do, pulled into a service area for a comfort stop, I noticed a small oil trail behind me, looked under the van and found a puddle of oil and the rest under the bonnet.
called out the men in yellow (AA) and they relayed me home.

After talking to a couple of mechanics and because she was driving fine, no over heating or loss of power, it was thought to be the oil cooler at fault, so I set to work.

I have changed the oil cooler and cleaned the engine bay (sort of)

I have started flushing the water system and got loads of oil and crud out and after flushing it about a dozen times the water was dirty but definitely water...

started the engine and let it warm up a bit and found oil back in the expansion tank ( i was expecting some to come through) but each time i ran the engine more oil came into the expansion tank until it was just oil, no water, i checked the oil level and it was very low ( I had filled it)

Now I'm thinking head Gasket???????
She's a mk6 jumbo 2.4l duratorq

Any help appreciated

Keep cleaning, usually you need radiator out , all hoses off , thermostat housing off etc to have any chance of getting clean, i use raw Rhino jet wash soap through jet wash and then build back up drive it for few days with loads of dishwasher soap and dishwasher cleaner in it , flush and repeat, flush and repeat ......takes ages

Hi andz327,

thanks for the reply.

but would i be getting pure oil in the expansion tank?

I was expecting oil and water mix but once the engine warmed up I had pure oil in the expansion tank, when i dipped my finger in it, it was asif I'd dipped it in the drain pan after an oil change....

Thanks
Tom

Sounds like the new cooler is defective if the oil level has gone down as well.

New parts can fail.

Hi Ned, Thanks for the reply.

Yes the thought had crossed my mind.

Thinking of getting a cheap tested second hand one seeing if that solves the problem before going down a more expensive route......head gasket/ recon...

Hi andz327

I first flushed it out by running plain water though several times and got lots of oil/ water and crud out.... then added dishwasher detergent again several times and the water was coming out dirty and oily but i could see progress...
I then topped up the oil and water and ran the engine for a bit, after about 10/15 mins oil started to bubble up though the expansion tank, at first it was oil on top of water, after several more flushes, it seemed to get more and more oil in the expansion tank until it looked like pure oil, i dipped my finger in the expansion bottle and it was like dipping it in the drain pan after an oil change.....

Checked the oil level and it had dropped to just showing on the dip stick.

Pull hoses off the oil cooler and see if oil pumps out the cooler
