Ive looked into this and im gonna run car tyres on mine!! bought em fitted em - just not mot'd yet!
each tyre has an Li number on this relates to the weight limit a tyre can take!!
Im not 100% but providied this isnt under you should be ok!!
not sure about insurance though!!

also make sure you use the GVW not the kerbweight!!
:D

One of ours once failed the test cos it didn't have commercial anywhere on the tyre (though they did have C for commercial, and were brand new, had to consult the Ministry to get the MOT station to pass them in the end.)

Yeah, that's what we said, and they did have C on them.

If i get stopped with mine i will argue mine is no longer a commercial vehicle - which it isnt!!
also i have windows in the back, and back seats!!
and mine is a classic so doesnt need a chassis plate!!!
it's a grey area and i think i will be unlucky to get 12 points and a ban for it!!! :?

but my alloys make my van look that cool it would be worth it!!

Put my Mk2 through an MOT with car tyres, according to my MOT man it's not a comercial cos it has to much glass and is a camper ?
never been pulled over though :)
A point of interest a Mk2 120 weighs less than a granada and is half a ton lighter than a jag

true!! but what about fully loaded? :?
also there are plenty of 4x4's VW Toureg for example which have a higher GVW than a transit - and dont need commercial tyres!!

.....and our Alex is the same wieght as my sister's Volvo estate. Put 4 big blokes and all thier luggage in a volvo and you could easily reach over 2 ton. Now that's hippacritical.

Well, like I added in the tyres thread, the Ford handbook quite clearly states that the fitment for the 1995 Torneo (9 seater) is 205/70 R14 and not the C version. This must have been homologated when the van was first registered with the authorities. I doubt very much that a manufacturer would take a risk with their specifications (both the 9 and 12 seat torneo's have the same spec, the 15 seater has 'C' tyres specified - all other variants of Transit in my handbook also have 'C' tyres specified.

 What confuses me a little is, are all 14" wheels on transits the same, but with different tyres specified. Also, just to widen the thread a little, why such a wide variation in tyre pressures. My 1989 9 seater SWB diesel minibus used 14" tyres with pressures of 2.9 all round, the 1995 9 seater Torneo is 2.3 all round. I know a diesel engine is heavier but wonder why the rear tyres should differ. The seating layout, running gear and chassis seem virtually identical. Any 'techies' out there who know the answer :?:

Cant say I know the answer to that Frank, but I can tell you that I run 185/14C on mine at 50psi(max is 60psi so well within limits).....I'll let you convert that to BAR.

What I'd like to know is why on the MK3/4/5 most of the wheels look the same but have different offsets? Its a pain trying to get wheels to fit my MK3, looks like I'm gona have to invest in a set of 15" alloys......which of course means I'll be left with a nearly new set of 14" tyres!
