Van struggles to start when warm

Postby jacky » Sat Jan 15, 2022 2:27 pm

My van starts no problem first thing in the morning but, say I go in for diesel then It struggles to start. The starter just cuts out then I try again. It starts on the 4th or 5th attempt. Seems to happen after the engine has heated up.

All the servicing is upto date including the fuel filter which was recently changed.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Possibly a tired starter, it may be full of clutch/DMF crud...often a good disassemble and clean out helps...or just replace it.

Thanks for reply. So the van just wouldnt start in Asda's carpark tonight so I called out the AA. The guy got me home and said its the Head Temperature Coolant Sensor that needs replacing.

Searching on here theres a post that states the fuel pump needs to be removed to get access to change it.

Vans a 2010 2.2

Really..?? Didn't know that. I know if the Cyl head temp sensor is faulty and causes the gauge to read high it will cause issues.

So does your cyl head temp read properly/correctly..??

Hi, yep no indication of any overheating. Im pretty sure he said something about the faulty sensor is sending a message to the computer and the van thinks its too warm so stops it starting ?? I honestly dont know how he came to this conclusion as he never run any diagnostics (No engine light on either). Vans going in next week to see what the issue is

If the CHT sensor is faulty they should give an indication on the temp gauge. Get yourself Forscan and a modified ELM-327 and find out yourself. Forscan will do live data and give you all the info.

I would have thought that if a sensor thought the van was overheating, it would flash up a warning and then cut out, not randomly not re-start :?

Sounds more like a faulty crank or cam sensor to me

Agree....possibly a duff crank sensor with DMF crud all over it.

Hi, yes I also thought it would throw up an engine management light but it hasnt. When I turn the key in the morning it starts no problem (Cold engine). If I turned the engine off and try and re start thats when it wont. :D

When i try and start it the starter motor just cuts out after turning a good few times. Am i right in saying they are made to do that?.

It usually starts after the 3rd or 4th attempt.

Ive ordered Forscan . Thanks for that

Often poorly starters will play up when hot and come good when cold.
