2011 2.4 RWD jumbo and Forscan question.

Postby Graham Reddy » Sat Apr 30, 2022 9:20 am

Hi guys. This will be the start of an epic I've no doubt.
Got my Jumbo off ebay last year and have converted it to a camper which I live in currently. Only done around 4000 miles since purchase ( 137 thou currently). It's got an oil leak, which is probably water pump as I've fitted a new vacuum pump in an attempt to clear it up and it didn't work ( going into Tim's later for a check). I've recently sorted out a Forscan set up and have started delving looking for the reason for the black smoke on acceleration ( a recent development or I haven't seen it before).

Figures I'm getting on my first run of the dashboard for cylinder balance are concerning and I guess one of you experienced transiteers may know what these figures actually mean, but I'm guessing it's not exactly factory set up. The numbers are as follows,at tickover even after a short drive. All minus except number two.

CylBal_1 - 1.13
CylBal_2 4.38
CylBal_3 - 3.00
CylBal_4 - 1.35

Anyone help with what that means ? Buggered injectors or something more complex ?

Having just had a negative experience at a main dealer and a collapsed wheel bearing I'm now trying to sort out the niggles which are manifesting. I'm sure it will be a wonderful journey of discovery. Having been a petrol freak for 45 years this is my first diesel and I don't have a clue what I'm doing yet. I can spanner and weld but don't have a workshop nowadays. This is the first of many questions I'm sure.

Oil leak sorted thanks to Tim at Light Commercial Services in Queenborough, Kent.

Having spent a good while laying under the van looking for the leak Tim found a split in the intercooler hose ( the one that ges to the manifold) which was spraying oil out only under load. Nowt to do with the water pump it turns out which saved me a job. Fortunately he had a spare hose for me to fit and so far looking good.

This may well have caused the values I posted above, definitely affected the fuel consumption, and appears to be the source of the black smoke trail I leave behind under certain conditions. That I'll check out later.

Many thanks to Tim. Really nice bloke and nothing like the scumbags at the main dealership who stitched me for 2 grand to fix a collapsed wheel bearing. Faith in humanity restored.

So after a run with the replacement intercooler hose ( and no further oil leak) I've tried pump and injector learns, both of which passed first time and resulted in the values above improving a lot. Number two is now at around +1.7 and number two -1.3 so I'm happy with that. 1 and 4 are both below -1. The injector area is a bit damp and slowly getting damper so it looks like a reseal is probably in order soonish, when I'll be able to play with Forscan again. I was expecting it to fail but it flew through.

Think I might plug it into my mates MX5 for a shifty.
