Postby Nel5on » Tue Apr 05, 2005 6:16 pm

Gidday,
Im new to the uk(NZ)and not had too much to do with transits but just want to make my camper cheaper to run...how hard is it to change a 2ltr petrol to a 2.5 diesel and five speed....seems you can pick the motors up for around £100....but what needs to be changed?

Also I just got an 4spd overdrive box off ebay and the guy has lots of old mk1,mk2 parts for sale ex amberlance parts...talked about other overdrive boxes and cosworth parts and lots of new parts also.
He wanted me to post his details for your contact. John 07980086445
Hes in Ripon
Thanks
Nelson :D

mate its not to bad to do if you are engine minded! what gearbox have you got???? a overdrive will need a belhouseing for a di and also crossmember and propshaft! ,have you allready a 5 speed ??????? also you will need a return feed to the fuel tank ,you need a complete engine starter ,battery cables etc etc ,you would be better off getting a complete scrap van so you have all the bitts!
also you will suffer with alot more noise from the di in the cab!

As for the noise, if yours is a custom model they have the most insulation anyway and have the least noise in the cab. You can put insulation in, under the rubber mats, on the inside of the firewall, over the inner wheel arches, and on the underside of the bonnet - fire risk note, we used a modern commercial carpet underfelt that looks like a black foam. I bought it from a commercial carpet shop, and tested a bit beforehand by trying to burn it with a cigarette lighter, it didn't burn, just glowed and crumbled when cold! Don't know the brand name of it though.

Sorry...I have a 2ltr pinto with 4spd Gearbox....am upgrading to a overdrive box out of an ambo this weekend, van cruises at about 60mph and i want about 65-70mph. The Idea is to upgrade to a late model 2.5 non turbo di mtr....I have been in Auto engineering most of my life but dont have any tools (25kgs luggage is not a lot to bring over) or equipment which means that i have to plan things out properly before i start. I dont have storage to get a donor van...thats why i need to plan first and knock it out in maybe a weekend or two. I have just carpeted the cab with 10mm thick carpet(not shagpile) the same as the back.
Thanks for your help.
