Ex-royal mail tyre pressures

Postby DG-Unit » Sat Jun 04, 2022 10:17 pm

Jubilee fever has got me thinking about Royal Mail tyre pressures. My van had 44/52 psi painted above the arches but Ford spec says 47.8 (3.3 bar) all around. Anyone know why Royal Mail did this? I can guess the higher pressure in the back was to carry around all the red rubber bands and discretely packaged Amazon orders, but why under-inflate the front?

Long live the Mk6

The only real downside to running the fronts below pressure, is that they wear out the tyre edges before the middle, the advantage being that the ride is a bit softer.

I used to run my Mk6 (FWD) at 52psi all round, and increased the rear to 55psi when fully loaded :)

I run mine at 53psi all round, the wellers I ran at 50psi, maybe royal snail keep the front slightly lower due to bouncing up Kerbs all day.

3.3 bar/47.8 psi… But I’m just being a pedant and trying to work out why Royal Mail thought they knew better than Ford which is a bit of a Dumb and Dumber situation but there we go.

This would make sense as they also seem to be concerned about never ever under any circumstances ever at all replacing a ball joint or bearings… but worn out tyres are fine.

royal mail garages are a separate concern to the delivery side ,and so have no involvement on mail delivery , and as they are more tightly governed and monitored by Health and safety and V.O.S.A than the general public , its unlikely that they would risk the wrath of said V.O.S.A by running under inflated tyres . I bought my van from an engineering company and boy did they know how to abuse a vehicle :(

Yes i do work for them , on the Logistics Hgv1 side , and again we have nothing to do with the delivery times . however as we personally are responsible for fines generated through V.O.S.A rgarding vehicles its in our interests to check tyres , pressures , tread , everything in fact .

Good insider knowledge! So how do you decide on the tyre pressures you put on the wheels arches when they differ from the manufacturer spec? Is that just to go over inflated rather than under or taking into account it will be fully loaded for a good part of the journey?

Royal mail dont do different pressures for loaded or empty vehicles , if the vehicle is heavily loaded consistently they would put a larger capacity vehicle on it , a swb Transit would only be used for local parcel or round local mail deliveries ,otherwise a 740cf vehicle would be employed , most letterboxes are emptied by 50cf or transit sized vans , larger collections are made by 740cf , Daf/Iveco vehicles , Parcelforce use Sprinter sized vehicles , with a high volume capacity but generally the pcls weigh less .the rise of online home shopping has opened the floodgates for Sprinter sized vehicles , ie , zamazon and deepeedee .

according to the website www.TyreRunner .com a 215/75/16 113R should be 44psi front , loaded or otherwise and a 215/75/16 116R should be 43psi front .

So still a bit of a mystery why my old Royal Mail van had 44/52 psi painted on the arches

What size tyres do you have ? as the numbers fit at 44 or 43 on the front
