Smart Alternator?.

I have a MK 7 2.2L SWB 125PS 280S series Transit.It's 2006- vehicle line. Can anyone tell me if this has a 'smart alternator' as I want to fit another battery to run a diesel heater. I want to add a 'split charge relay' but apparently you can't do that with a smart alternator. Cheers.

There is no Mk7 2006 2.2 125ps engine....Unless you have a Euro-5 built after Sept 2011..?

Adding a split charge relay and another battery should be no issue. Twin batteries were a factory option on the FWD Mk7's...the RWD's had twin batteries as standard but they were connected in parallel as switch on. When switched off, all the vehicle electrics such as clock, alarm and internal lights etc were run from the front battery...this is why the front battery tends to fail first.

Just fit a BtoB and be done with it, you can't allways get away with a VSR with a smart alt cos some times the voltage is too low to trigger the VSR and they can flick on and off and burn up or just flat out not ever turn on, a BtoB can use an ign trigger wire to switch it on whereas a VSR doesn't have this it just relys on seeing enough voltage for a set time to turn on.
