ELM 327 question

Happy hollidays everyone and letts ask here,
The wife got rear ended in her bm troubleyou, she is fine but i finally never have to work on that car again.
She founded a beetle from 99 ( needed a car fast offcourse) and the first thing i always look for when buying a car is a obd reader.
As it turns out, i see a lot off things on the ELM 327 that should be able to connect with VW also.
Can someone point me in the right direction for what program to buy or dl, or is it not possible to use the ELM i got for the transit?
