unloved van needs tlc

im back with another unloved van only this time it needs mechanical tlc.. and im not familiar with diesels.

it has a somewhat sketchy past having been filled with and run on petrol, the ecu was fried (has an aftermarket piggy backed on, apparently) no regular servicing and only used for short short journeys. the oil is gunky and once the engines properly up to temp theres smoke from the back of the engine with a fumey smell in cabin (see video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hyBb6sjBcoM ) .. oh and the roof in the back is literally dripping wet with water.

so er, help! please? things to check or do?

Well that looks like an oil leak that is dripping on the exhaust , first place to look would be where the oil filter is ..it should be there with an oval shaped alloy thing that is the oil cooler.
some models leak at the oil cooler gasket

so you need to solve the oil leak problem first

then after that look at an oil change .

gunky oil - do an oil change x 2 but first do it with the cheapest oil you can buy ..usually 10w 40 or something like that from home bargains .....run for 5 miles drop it out and put the proper stuff in which should be 5w 30 synthetic

DO NOT USE FLUSHING OIL ..

‘Sounds’ like there may be an injector fire washer / seal blowing or an exhaust / egr leak..

i was planning to use some sort of flush / cleaner and then do an oil and filter change. its not actually done a lot of miles, less than 50k

it's like that game show that shows parts of a football players face, back of head etc and you have to guess who he is. but this time with 20 percent of an engine showing .
