Starter motor gone? symptoms/tests?

Okay. The DTCs are in:

B1209 Instrument cluster switch bank 2 circuit failure
B1205 instrument cluster switch bank 1 circuit failure

Poorly earths somewhere maybe..??

I know you may want to fix your cluster issues,and confirm it’s not flattening the batteries….

But other than if it’s flattening the batteries,cluster has no effect on starting and vehicle should start and run even without it plugged in (same for mk7)

Actually mine has never started and run with the instrument cluster out/disconnected. I noticed this when I was doing the Mk7 dash conversion. I’m fully expecting more issues but I’ve just shed out £200 and will have a rebuilt instrument cluster back to me on Monday.

And the winner was… starter motor. Whipped a new one in. Got a £5 valentine’s day discount from Euro Car Parts because they know I’m not buying anything for anyone else with this van.

The dash didn’t make a difference (although it does work much better now) but also the ABS light is still on so maybe that is a mechanical thing I need to look at. Charged the battery from a mains charger and that didn’t do it. Realised I don’t have a fused earth link because i replaced the earth cable. Forscan showing no codes again. MoT booked. Let’s hope this ABS think isn’t too much.

Abs fault could be a duff censor or and knackered abs ring thing, I had a bent one inside one rear drum brake, nothing some pliers didn’t sort out

Good shout. I forgot about the rear sensors! Do you think a fluid flush would make any difference as well?

Not on an abs fault, it’ll either be an broken wire, knackered sensor head or abs ring, have you done any work on the brakes?

None since 2021. It had new rear cylinders and pads, new discs and pads up front and i replaced one ABS sensor that I nicked with an angle grinder. Also replaced the driveshafts which have the ABS teeth on. The light started coming on when I was in France in the summer and would be intermittent but is now permanent. Doesn’t throw any DTC with Forscan. I might have a look at the front sensor I didn’t replace.
