glow plug bypass fix

Postby jedtrently » Mon Jul 17, 2023 3:37 pm

Hi,
Bought a 2014 mk7 transit jumbo last year. 2.2 tdci rwd. Only just getting round to taking it apart and checking out the engine. I've discovered that one of the glow plugs has been bypassed. No fault codes from the glow plug in question but ideally i'd like to run 4. A blanking bolt has been screwed in where the glow plug was and underneath I have discovered a snapped glow plug. The thread that the blanking bolt has been screwed into is a little crap. Not sure if this is a mechanics work, or the very top of the normal glow plug insertion thread. It seems to be M10 X 1.0...that's what the blanking bolt is anyway that was screwed in there originally (along with some high temperature sealant)

I see my options as:
-chase threads, replug hole and run 3 glow plugs, along with the dummy that's currently mounted. (How will this generally affect the running of the engine?)
-get snapped plug out and see if I can fit a 4th normally

I would appreciate any advice someone can give :D
Cheers

Looks like someone has tried to replace them and run into issues....and then run away screaming..!

You don't really need glow plugs to start, mine have been disconnected for years, I have a Euro-4 though...but I believe the regen on the Euro-5's won't work properly if the glow plugs are not working...?? I stand corrected on that though.

Cheers for the reply, Knobby!

Yeah, it seems it's in fact a tap stuck down there from what others have said...So, definitely a nightmare experience for someone haha.

It seems too tight for a screw extractor to work, and I can't really see any other way to get it out. I wouldn't feel confident drilling it out: a, the precision needed, and b, debris falling into the cylinders. If I feel rich, i'll get one of those glow plug professional mechanics to see if they want a crack at it.

May be one of those ones that you have to live with unfortunately, but like you say, they're not essential for these diesel engines. I think the previous owner knew the 4 plugs were needed for the Euro 5 perhaps, hence the dummy system he had rigged.

Is the regen system you mention the EGR system or something else? About the blank off the EGR and delete so i'm wondering if I can do away with the dummy plug after I do that, it gets in the way a bit.

Thanks

The only other way is to weld a nut onto it ..find a nut that is slightly bigger and put in place and fill the nut with weld ..welder set quite high.

This welds the nut on .........heats it up to beyond what it normally runs at ..so loosens it in the threads at the same time, its quite normal that you may have to put in place a few nuts as they may break off ..many attempts are possible.

I don't know the construction of them, all depends on what metal the glow plug is made out of ..I suspect steel with a ceramic core like a sparkplug ..

all the best.mark

Regen has nothing to do with the EGR system. It's all about the DPF, (Diesel Particulate Filter)...the 5th glow plug, vapouriser and sensors run the DPF system....usually more trouble than they're worth and cause 200% more pollution during a regen than they save by catching the diesel particulates in the first place..Nearly half the Euro-5 "issues" we see on this forum are due to the DPF system not working properly. The "normal" 4 glow plugs need to be working properly for the DPF regen system to work correctly...most people just gut the DPF and get it mapped out. IMHO essentially it's a "do-gooder" solution to a problem which didn't really exist. Modern common rail diesels run considerably cleaner than the older systems. I remember when I was a young lad the old diesel trucks in the 1960's and 70's spewing black smoke everywhere, very rare to see that these days. Just my humble opinion.

Whilst I confess to knowing very little about DPF regenerating on Euro 5 2.2 Transits, I thought that I read on this very forum, that the only glow plug needed for a regen to work, was the 5th one, attached to the DPF, which has its own separate wiring and fuse.

I'll see if I can find the relevant post before I get blasted
