Transit Specialist - Bristol area or near Cheshire?

Postby Lull » Mon Jul 31, 2023 2:58 pm

Anyone know of a decent & reasonable Transit wizard, in the North West UK or Bristol area, who can diagnose and fix a problem of vibration whilst accelerating/high speeds and some other clunking/oddities?

Mk8 Transit 2.0 Adblue 2018
The problem was first noticed when driving from UK to Portugal in Nov 2022. It may have been there before, and I do know that ever since I bought the van in Feb 2022 there was a 'knocking' sound at low speeds in first gear when steering wheel was at (or near?) full lock. May be a separate issue (power steering?)

Since buying the van, I had steel wheels changed for alloys. The guy changing them pointed out that there was something wrong with the boot (?) behind the front drivers side wheel... maybe the knuckle / joint thingemy? Think maybe it was leaking? He also pointed out that the brake disc on the other side was unevenly worn with rust on part of it where the brake wasn't removing it.

Also, just before setting off, I had the timing belt changed by Ford dealership with oil change (and a new battery).

The problem initially seemed to happen at a specific speed - at around 112kmph (?) - a feeling of sideways vibration/wobble that went away if I slowed down.

Now it mostly seems to happen whilst accelerating at higher speeds, maybe also now starting to happen at lower speeds when accelerating (so higher RPM). Particularly noticeably on motorway in 5th and 6th gear. You can 'go past' it and the vibration reduces or almost disappears, as it does if going at the same speed but down hill. I feel like there is still a hint of the vibration there though. It's quite dramatic and seems to be getting worse.

A new loud 'clunk' occasionally happens in lower gears, where the whole van jerks (gearbox?)

I've also noticed a leak of some fluid under the engine bay - video here: https://imgur.com/a/dPRYYU3 ...it doesn't seem to be oil, nor smell particularly strongly of anything

From reading, some things to check seem to be (bearing in mind this means very little to me) :
- Driveshaft
- Uni joints and centre mounts
- Centre bearing
- Flexible couplings
- Motor mount
- CV joint (likely the thing the wheel change guy mentioned?)
- Tire balance

I'm wondering about taking it to a local gearbox place... this one seems to get good reviews : https://grgb.org.uk ...but I'm unsure if it's the right sort of place for diagnosis of this issue, or if I need a specialist transit wizard?
