Can front drive shafts give a chattering sound?

I'm trying to identify a noise coming from the front of my AWD Mk7, suspect it to be a gearbox noise but wanted to rule any other areas that could make the noise first. The noise is a chattering/clattering that is only occasional, during 99% of driving it is not there, appears just as the front drive shafts are recieving some power through the transmition, so far only at slow speed and whilst turning.
Can drive shafts make noises like this? and are there any simple checks to do to assess them for problems?

Yes if you turn full lock and start to drive you'll hear the cv joint rattle
Go to large empty car park and try it on full lock one way and drive, then the other way and you should hear if worn

seems they are fine, no noises with the awd disconnected and turning in a car park. Cheers.

4wd disconnected does that make it fwd or rwd (excuse my ignorance with 4wd tranny)..... the driveshaft/cv joint needs to be underload (fwd) for to make noise if worn

Ah ok, so awd disconnected makes it rwd only. So if I have awd working then the clattering is there as drive shafts take some torque but this could also be from the front gearbox at that point. Is there any other way of checking the drive shafts? Maybe for play?
I could try getting the awd to drive the front in a straight line and see if the noise is still there, so far I've always heard it whilst cornering but am thinking this is just because of how the gearbox works off of relative differences in wheel speeds.
Will a problem driveshaft tend to be quiet with wheels straight ahead and only make noise with wheels turned hard?

Yes need to be turning and take up the drive , turn one way then and take up the drive then try opposite way and see if noise changes, yes check for torn cv joint boot or if you've had one in the past that's leaked out all the grease maybe be the culprit, yes you can check for sideways movement and overall looseness by hand

As I'm finding out now on my connect, now we have a 20 mph in Wales ,, it is possible if you drive in too higher gear for the speed you are going at .. will result in chatter / clattering.
20 MPH is 3rd in my connect unless i go up to 24 ish, i can then use 4th .
speedo reads 20 mph at 17 ish though .. so at 24mph on speedo ..i should be ok .ishhhh
