Odometer jumped from 166,607 to 788,899

Hi this is John emailing from New Zealand. We have owned a 2005 Ford Transit Van mk6 manual for seven years. So know it quite well. Last week we took it for its yearly MOT and service and the odometer reading was 166,607, but when we got home and I read the MOT report the odometer reading showed 788,899. I checked the odometer reading in the van and it was the same high reading.
What could the garage have done to cause the reading to jump so high. All the gauges and dials in the instrument panel are working as before, and the odometer is also working.
Can anyone please offer an explanation before I go back to the garage tomorrow.

Did they change the instruments/clocks at all..??

Looking close to in most of the numbers to 65535, wonder if it was really 165535 and you missed it as that is a computing systems roll over time, hard drives etc reset themselves to zero at 65535 hours.
i know about this cause my hard drive hours reset itself to zero 12 months back ...and i looked into it

Hi there thanks for your replies, The garage said they had not interfered with anything to do with the odometer and told me to go to an auto electrician but apply for a second mortgage first to pay them.
Everything in the gauge control consul is working perfectly, even the odometer that now reads 788,899 is ticking over the k’s and the trip function can be reset to zero.
It is just the high k’s that make the engine appear well used.
Any more information on how to reset the odometer back to 166,000 would be appreciated. Thanks John.

Well there is only one, of many choices, and that is : you have is to take out the cluster and send it to:

This is one of many companies that perform this service ...the above one, as far as i can make out, from feedback here on this forum, is one of the trusted ones.

Auto electricians ..will only be able to help so much ..they will end up sending your cluster to one of these companies.

By sending it yourself, you cut out the middleman.

Total cost will be in the region of £70. (check the websites prices)

Thank you all for your input. I ended up taking our Ford Transit campervan to the local auto tech recommended by the Ford dealer in town.
The job card read: Removed and dismantled cluster. Traced fault to corrosion in circuit board ( through holes). Removed LCD’s , plug and all needle stepper motors. Cleaned all corrosion and sealed with circuit board lacquer.Refitted all removed components, reassembled and refitted cluster to vehicle. Tested - ok.
Materials used: Solder, consumables and materials.
Everything working well and the kilometre reading is back to where it should be.
Cost nearly NZ$400.00 that’s about £200.O0 It was in the workshop for three hours.
So hopefully good job done.
