MK1 starting issue

Postby SCam1985 » Mon Dec 25, 2023 4:28 am

Hi Guys,
I hope your all well. Merry Christmas.

I had an issue with my van, cutting out when it got above 50mph. The injectors were changed, along with glow plugs (as it came up as a fault too) and also crankshaft sensor.
He was running fine for about a week, but now he’s a pain to start. It’s like he’s an air lock but it’s been re-bled a number of times.
When I turn the key, he chugs to get started, the battery light is on and I have no throttle. This is for anything between 10 seconds to 30 seconds then the battery light goes off and he’s idling fine, and I have throttle response.
I haven’t managed to get to the garage to plug him back in, and he has no other problem (drives great with no dash lights or coughing etc)
When it rains tho, I have noticed rainbow colours on the floor by the drivers wheel but I’m just wondering if anyone else has had a similar issue.
I will take it to a garage to get scanned in the new year.

Cheers

Sarah

I'm guessing it's not actually a Mk1 ?

If the battery light is on, first thing to check is voltage at the battery(ies) and monitor from the alternator cranking/starting/running.

As a guess you've got two batteries and the front one is low and the alternator is not charging properly.

From the OP's signature and previous posts, I think we're talking about a 2003 Connect, so only a single battery.

Keep forgetting there's little vans too
And crapatalk doesn't show signatures

I’m sorry, it’s a 2003 Ford Connect. I thought I was on the correct page to post it.
My apologies.

water in the fuel is worth a check ......at the bottom of the fuel filter there is a water drain ..open it up and let some out (fuel will float on water ..so the water come out first)

not tried this myself, so don't know if it will will cause an air lock

if it runs well after this ..then reverts back, then there is probably more water to let out .

drivers wheel area would be under the fuel filter ..so worth checking for leaks ...there has also been reported on some connects a leak in the fuel pipe where it passes under the bulkhead on its way to the back ..it can rub on the bend ..this is also in the area where its likely to drip by the wheel.

this post may be handy ..for the pipe leak if it has one ...also lists the ford service manual procedures for checking air ingress into the fuel system
