Transit Custom 2.0 P0202 after engine replacement.

Postby Solid_State » Sun Feb 04, 2024 7:21 pm

Hi all,

My friend has a 2019 Transit Custom 2.0. Engine code BKFB.
The engine was replaced with a second-hand engine in September after an impact pierced the oil pan.
The replacement was not done by an official Ford mechanic, but the insurance company gave him the green light to replace it anyway (he was deep in the Alps, far from an official Ford dealer).

There were some teething problems (loss of power, possible limp-home mode - I'm not too sure, I wasn't there), but it was sorted at the time by the mechanic who replaced the engine.

In the time between September - December, the van drove fine, apart from an intermittent check-engine light accompanied with "Confer manuel" message on the dashboard. The display language is French, and I don't know what the equivalent of "confer manuel" is in English. I didn't read the codes at the time, since the insurance was supposed to take care of the whole thing.

Just before Christmas, she started running on three cylinders.
Since the van is under warranty, and since it was clearly a matter for the insurance, I once again didn't read the codes, figuring that they'd get it sorted pretty quickly at Ford.

They finally brought it to the garage on the 23rd of January, they replaced the turbo (I do not know why) and when they handed it back to him, they told him "be careful, there's a problem with this engine".
I told him to insist on them putting that in writing, and they sold him some bullshit story that in order to do a report they have to perform a compression test, which the van is now booked in for.

A day or two after getting the van back with the new turbo, she was once again running on three cylinders and in limp-home mode.

By this time I had had enough and decided to have a look myself. My friend like myself is a plumber and he's about to go bankrupt, not being able to work without his van.

I got an Autocom code reader hooked up and there was one single DTC: P0202 - injector 2 open circuit.
I swapped over injectors 1 and 2 today and now we've got P0201.
I also tested the ohm value across the injectors. 1, 3 and 4 all had 200 kΩ and 2 had 112 kΩ.

One other thing: when I removed the injectors, they were extremely rusty (pics) and the actual injection nozzle is filthy too.

Questions:
1: Is there any reason why we can't buy a new injector and install it?
2: Do injectors actually have to be coded to a cylinder?
3: Do Ford themselves have to do this or can I find someone else to code the injector?
3: Could there be a deeper underlying cause of this problem?
4: Can anyone shed any light on the state of the injectors - body and nozzle itself?

TLDR: Can P0202 on an injector which has a different Ω value to the others be fixed by replacing the injector, and is there anything else I should be aware of, or any other problems which can destroy an injector?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Think that rust will be due to ...leak of rainwater into engine bay ..either in previous van or his ..or the used engine was lying in a scrap yard, out in the open for months.

or engine pressure washed and left for a long while

funny how the tops have not rusted through

all the best.mark
