Air Ir Fuel Line Just before Engine

Postby Simontfs » Fri Dec 08, 2023 7:36 pm

I have a large air bubble in the fuel line just before it goes to the engine (pump?) how do I get rid of this air bubble. I changed the filter last week and didn't notice it. The van Starts after a couple of tries, and runs ok, but its obviously not supposed to have an air bubble, I'm guessing this would cause a low pressure into the engine not giving me all the power compared to if there was no air bubble in the line. Can I take the black plug off the side of the engine raise it up so the bubble comes to the top, turn the key to take up gap from the air in the pipe and reconnect the plug in the side of the engine. Can Anyone help? The Yellow Highlight is where the bubble is in the line that runs behind the air intake tube, and the red circle is the black plug id like to remove to try to get rid of the air bubble. Please help, as this is causing starting problems.https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YTcW0Sj0BnFGjIaW-FpRMNBhkAg3bvIJ/view?usp=sharing

You've not told us what model Transit you have...??? Assuming Mk7 2.2 FWD Euro-4 since you mention the clear/opaque fuel line. The 2.4 Euro-4's don't have this clear fuel line. Air ingress is a major issue for our Transits. Finding the ingress point and actually sorting it can be a major pain. Yes you can remove the black plug....but all you'll do is introduce even more air into the system....you need to find out where it's coming from in the first place. Common causes are: cracked filter head, fuel filter seal, injector leak-off lines & their O-rings....low pressure fuel lines & their O-rings to/from the tank, split pick-up line from the tank etc..etc..

Good evening Lord Knobrot,

Thank you so much for your reply :)

So to confirm, its a Euro4 2.2 Tdci FWD. I should have mentioned that I Had replaced the Diesel Filter. I bought one filter, that didn't fit properly, so Then I had to order another one, and now it fits good. The air got into the system During the messing around with the diesel filters. I can confirm that it hasn't gotten worse or better, but that the damned bubble is still there.

Not sure but Could this cause a slightly erratic idle, and a slight loss of torque/power?

The ambient temperature has risen slightly and the van starts almost every time fist time, sometimes second times, but I believe that is a glow plug issue that I will use Forscan for in the near future. Possibly tomorrow. and I'm sure ill need help deciphering these codes; but that's another issue.

I changed the oil two days ago, and made the most of the situation and removed the aircover, here's the link, where the air bubble is visible.

I hope that you can guide me step by step to get rid of this damn bubble. Thank you so much for you help.

PS you will notice other issues in this video...AKA the injector seals etc, but that's gonna be in another post, as I have a bunch of questions about that.

The air bubble in the translucent low pressure line is in itself not a major issue, if this air finds it's way into the high pressure side of things, it will cause issues.....we get lots of posts with air in the low side of the system visible in that fuel line. Only the FWD's have this clear line, the RWD's do not have a clear line so people don't see the air although I'm sure it happens. Finding the point of air ingress is the main issue. All the low pressure lines, connectors and their O-rings must be checked....all the way back to the fuel tank pick-up.

Alternative view ..as if it wasn't coming from a leak

These are observations .
- Well suppose ..you do a lot of driving about on the bumpy roads and the diesel gets microbubbles in it ...sucked or pumped from the tank along pipes.
the microbubbles then collect at the highest point and then grow into a larger bubble....
Also note this.... If you get a bottle of diesel give it a shake...then see how long the bubbles take to disperse.
So what happens when you put your diesel in full wack at the petrol station.....its froths up the filler like lemonade ..still stays frothy for a few minutes.....then you drive sucking it in.
solution fill up slowly

The main solution is ..no bends that act as traps , nothing that goes up, then down, to go up again.....the microbubbles will then not collect anywhere ..and go harmlessly through the system ...i can see in you video that you have pipes that go up then down .. you must correct them .

filter should ideally be mounted lower down...don't think fords do this . ..you should have nowhere in the system that goes down hill...of course if you park your van uphill all the time ..then this will also help.
Note: then another problem observed, parking uphill in these fords will cause rain water leaks to be worse .

all the best.mark

Thanks for the input, it's much apreciated. I believe the fuel line is orIginal. So the fuel in this line, flows into the side of the engine or away from it back to the white filter? I'm pretty sure it flows into the side of the motor and not the other way back up and along the width of the engine bay and back to the white filter...
