Alternator

Good Morning, I have a 1991 transit campervan, and just replaced the alternator and battery. The alternator is charging at 12 volts but when i put the lights , fan blower on i expected the voltage to go up to 14 volts then settle back to 12 v ,but it never moves above 12 volts, is this right? i have just paid £100 to have this repaired/ reconditioned , please can you help, any advice much appreciated.

Doesn't sound like it's charging, does the voltage rise from battery voltage when the engine is started, or when revved up?

Have had it before when I used to refurb them where it didn't kick in at first and we would use a wire attached to the little pos terminal and touch it to the big pos terminal on the alt this would excite it and usually work fine after.

Can't remember exactly why it worked somat to do with the little one is meant to signal it to start charging but not always enough to register but once it's been loaded up its fine

I have tried wiring across both the large and small wires but no results.Can I disconnect the wires from the alternator and run it disconnected to see what reading i get or will that damage the alternator and does anyone know where does the small black wire from the alternator go , any help much appreciated

Running it should be around
13.8 v-14.3v
