2000-2006 swb high roof engine swap

Postby Butcha » Wed Aug 07, 2024 11:02 am

Multiple technical probs to do with this engine swap, & a very complicated story so I'll start off brief(not). As mentioned in my intro I purchased van 1 with dead engine. Van 2 had a supposed goer engine but dead body. Body #'s indicated compatability. van 2 had already had an engine change though. Engines are in fact DOFA & D4FA ( only similar I guess)
Mech has carried out engine swap as well as most components swapped. They now believe the ECU needs swapping (as it won't start)however body 2 got scrapped.
I need either manuals or info to try to determine PN required. As yet I don't have Model #'s etc for you so I'm guessing it's all too vague. But it's the relationship between engine, diesel pump & fuel control computer that needs to be got right. Transit spares in Oz, just say, have you got a PN of the FCU you want & say they don't have manuals. Haven't approached Ford yet.
Ideas?
& Apologies for vaguery. It's all been with the Mechs since day 1 pretty much & they don't want to sort it out.

Assuming the two engines you have are TDDi engines..?? There' two types of fuel pumps on the TDDi's, VP-30 which goes on the 75 & 90ps 2.4 engines and the VP-44, which is used on the 115, 120 & 125ps 2.4 engines.

You have a DOFA which is the 125ps engine... and a D4FA which is the 90ps engine...they use different fuel pumps, VP-30 vs VP-44 and hence different EDC which lives in the little box on top of the fuel pumps....they are not interchangeable.

If you swap one engine and it's pump for another, the PCM, (Powertrain Control Module), often mistakenly called an ECU, must go with that engine or it will never run. The PCM talks to the EDC on the fuel pump, if the EDC isn't recognised by the PCM, the engine will never start.

The fuel pumps can be "virginised" but the PCM must be the correct one for the engine type. Engine harnesses can be different too. There's also different dashes for them, the early Mk6 had an anologue dash, the later ones had digital...the dash harness and engine harness needs to be correct for each....they are not interchangeable.

Praise the Lord,
& Thanks,
Will try to get my head around that & see if I can get the Mechs to care about my substantial investment so far.
Don't spose PCM's have PN's people can rattle off the top of their head(s)? Coz it sounds like that's what I need to be looking for.
