Grey smoke when starting, black smoke when accelerating

Postby Captain pugwash » Sat Aug 17, 2024 5:36 pm

My 2015 Transit 2,2tdci puts out a bit of grey smoke when it starts, sometimes it quite a bit other times not too much, it's now started putting out quite a bit of black smoke when under acceleration. The engine sounds smooth and starts easily. I've recently downloaded Forscan and purchased an ELM 327 Cable and taken the following screenshot of live data such as cylinder balance etc, i'm hoping someone can assist with diagnosing the issue, i assume it's an injector but not too sure if i've set the correct live tests to check the injectors. Also the DPF shows soot LD 300% but there's no warning light. The van has done 150,000 miles.
I've read that it won't do a regen as the DPF is blocked, but if you reset this it will then allow a regen? Is this a work round to get it to regen?

If you can see smoke coming from the exhaust then the DPF may be damaged or may have been removed. How long have you had the van? Black smoke under acceleration is fairly normal on a vehicle without a DPF, especially one that has been re mapped. Does the engine use oil? It could be the turbo causing smoke on start up.

I've had the van about 6 months, it's only started putting out any smoke in the past few weeks. When i did the test with Forscan i was a bit shocked when i saw the soot level at 300%. It's never had any EML come on or the regen light. The oil level seems pretty stable and i'm not aware of it being remapped by any previous owner.
I've ordered a leak down test kit so hopefully this might show if there are any issues with any of the injectors.

I've managed to get a leak off test done, i've attached the photo of the readings, as can be seen they are all pretty even, i did the test at idle for about 4 or 5 minutes, i'm not sure if it could still be an injector fault that's causing the smoke on start up.
Could it be oil seeping past the copper injector seal that's causing the smoke when it's starts up?
