Manufacturers will get away with whatever they think they can, because they have legal teams to bat away any opposition. If they think that it's cheaper to meet any successful warranty claims, rather than recall and fix the problems, then they will carry on fighting the claims, and denying that the problem is widespread.
There are, in fact, thousands of vans fitted with wet belt engines, out there working away with no apparent problems, and many with high mileage. It would be interesting to know how many of these have had new wet belts, or even engines, fitted under warranty!
At least the problem has been sorted in the Connect, because, for a few years now, it has had the 1.6 and 1.5 PSA engine (with a dry belt) fitted.
