Mk6 2.4 TD engines dies?

Postby JRHartley » Fri Dec 13, 2024 1:10 pm

Just picked up a nice mk6 2004 Transit 2.4td, when cold it will fire straight up & run for 2-3 mins, then dies, it will fire up again then it will die, the more times you start it the less time it will run for. I will fit an early one wire pump but until then is it a sensor etc? thank you

Not been able to check yet. Will a general Reader work on this or does it have to be a fancy Ford unit? thanks

I don’t know if a general reader will work. It was recommended to me that I get the free to download Forscan program and buy a vlinker cable from Amazon. It works brilliantly.

As for your problem with the transit, I'm sorry I can’t help I’ve. It experienced it.

What Harvy said...Forscan and a V-Linker cable....cheaper than a garden variety reader and garranteed to work. Most cheap readers can't cope well with the Transit protocols.

Thanks for the replies, I might just rig up can of fuel above the pump & feed it gravity style

Having talked to the previous owner Ive replaced the fuel filter as its not been done for a very long time.
The filter when fitted as per instructions does not lock into place, as in it can still be pulled down wards & removed. Are these filter heads a problem?
Maybe buy a filter head with primer pump, or should I replace with a Ford head? thanks

Filter doesn't fit properly..?? Is it a genuine or good quality filter..?? Are the filter head lugs damaged..?? A known good second hand filter head should be ok.

yeah the filter matches the old one & looks to spec',I used a mirror to check the internal lugs, just looks a bit cheap to me, Why the hell would Ford fit a filter head that can not prime the system.

Because you're supposed to fill the filter before fitting it....although on a Mk6 TDDi, it can still cause issues.

If you run out of fuel or have a leak, it will need some kind of pump to get the fuel back up to the filter head though, didn't early Transits have a lift pump? I quess the bean counters scrubbed that one out.

If you fill the fuel filter, and coax the engine to fire, (if necessary using a sniff of WD40 or similar into the air intake), then the fuel system will bleed itself as soon as it fires up.
If you've emptied all of the system back as far as the tank, you may need to do this 2 or 3 times before the engine will run properly.

The early 120/125's had a lift pump on top of the filter head...but it was deleted by Ford quite early....deemed by them to be unnecessary I suspect.
