Limited Slip Diff

Postby rallyevo3 » Sun Dec 11, 2005 8:29 pm

Can you get an LSD for a 98 smiley face (MK5)?

How common are they?

What the chances of finding one in a scrapper?

Will one fit from anything else? capri atlas axle for example..

IIRC there was no option to have a limited slip differential on the 95 series.
On the 98 model, you could specify BTCS which was a brake traction control system.
This gave the same effect as the limited slip, upto 25mph the speed signals for the ABS were monitored and if the slip was greater that a predetermined level on 1 wheel, the ABS applied the brake to that wheel. This has the effect of sending the drive to the other wheel.

The timkin axle on transit MIGHT be able to take the diff unit if it's the right size to bolt the crown wheel.

If you have the bigger salsbury type axle (15" wheels) you'll have to look for an SVO equipped Transit rear axle, there weren't that many of them tbh.

Special Vehicle Options?

Why do you want one? Are you having grip problems?

I park in a Paddock and it's slightly uphill to the gate.... with an unladen Tranny having as much grip as a tomato on ice an LSD would be a major improvement

It won't give that much more grip to be honest in those conditions, instead of spinning one wheel, youll spin them both as you try to pull away

Tyres with a more open tread pattern are the way to go, although road noise will increase.

If your parking up on slippy grass a lot, why not consider parking the back wheels on boards?
You know, like they do with the off roaders, the boards are connected to the vehicle by a cord...maybe 10ft long so as soon as you gain traction you pull the boards behind you untill your on the harder ground.

Might be a bit too hardcore though

Or try not parking head onto the incline, try it at a 45 degree angle so the weight is transfered more to one wheel.

Some of the twin wheel ambulances did have the option, but not all of the fleets took the option.

If you find a vehicle, jack one rear wheel up, try and spin it by hand...if you can spin it, it's a normal diff.

I've never checked if the same components are fitted between the type 51 and the 51a axles.
