Throttle body help

Postby Andy Mac274 » Mon Jun 03, 2024 7:53 pm

Hi, could anyone advise on the following.

Euro 5 2.2. I've been having cold start issues with our mk8 for a number of months. Forscan no DTC, runs a dream once started. I'm working my way through various things.

I've removed the throttle body and the butterfly flap is completely open. It will close under resistance but rests in the open position. Is this normal ?

I thought throttle bodys were almost closed when off and opened subject of air demand etc on start up.

Ta
Andy.

sorry don't know completely know it works ..but its NOT there to aid acceleration, and is not an accelerator, its there as part of the EGR system, aiding the engine to gobble up more exhaust gas by closing off intake, so forcing Engine to suck even more exhaust gas in through the EGR - during certain engine RPM's and conditions. Probably over a period of time will send your van to the scrap yard quite a bit sooner.

Only the Euro-5's have the silly throttle body....doesn't exist on the Euro-4's. It's "not" part of the EGR system as such.

Did you get anywhere with this? I’ve just been trying to sort out an issue with my Mk8 minibus.

2.2l 125ps
Camper conversion

I won’t bother you with the details of exactly what’s been going on for the last 18 months, but basically it’s never been quite right multiple remaps, turbos, dpfs, EGRs, sensors and now I have a constant under boost for the last nine weeks It’s is a misery to drive unless you are ragging the balls off of it.. Specialist & Ford couldn’t find an issue.

So the latest is……….
I’m having a strange read out on Forscan.

My EGR throttle position commanded is 0%

However, my EGR throttle plate measured is 100% (well 99.6%)

Cables have been Tested for continuity and for voltage and all seems well however my read out from Forrest scan seems to be backwards. I would presume that 0% means closed & 100% means open.

Just to clarify, we have a Mark eight transit custom for work and I have used for scan on this and as I expected both of the values commanded and measured are exactly the same 100%

Any light shed on this would be hugely appreciated as I am losing patience, money, and days/weeks/months off my life

Hi,

Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

I am looking at the same issue and trying understand why the throttle body does not appear to do anything.

I have been battling a rough running issue for months.

Cleaned inlet manifold, Replaced timing chain, new injectors, replaced pcm, bcm, cam shaft sensor, checked earthing, blanked egr.
