2015 2.2 FWD 350 fault code u0401

Postby jobby1000 » Tue Jul 01, 2025 2:39 pm

Hi everyone
Please help if you can as I’m right at the end of my tether now.
I fairly recently purchased a 2015 Fwd 350 with 100k on the clock
If I just drive it round town it runs perfectly but as soon as I get on open road and drive at a constant 60-65 mph for about 15 minutes the traction control light and check engine come on and goes into limp mode.
So I stop turn engine off and start back up, no light on and away it goes again, but will soon do it again.
I did take it to jimmy O’Rilys and his mechanic said it was the turbo actuator and abs module, so replaced the actuator and sent the abs pump/module off for testing /repair.
Nothing wrong with abs module, but I had it refurbished anyway.
So I’m still none the wiser, I’ve searched just about ever inch of this forum and I’m not the only one who has had these problems, only thing is no one seems to know what it is.
Fault code that keeps coming up is u0401
Any help greatly appreciated, unfortunately I don’t have a bottomless pit of money just to keep replacing stuff in the hope that something might cure it.
It’s had a new egr- turbo actuator -abs module - also had a DPF clean.

i answered that fault with another poster only the other day in the mk8 forum ..here's the answer.

maybe your Scanner isn't up to it .

if so .
Forscan - that's what they recommend here .

NOTE: you can use forscan to get correct fault codes with proper explanation of them - a generic fault code reader may be somewhat misleading, or doesn't work

"Forscan" is FREE software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable -- this is just the cable, you need a laptop)
You can join the forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.

https://forscan.org/forum/

Then you come here list the fault codes here ..and we will try to work out the problem.

MEANWHILE PUT THIS WORDING INTO GOOGLE, "AI" results - TELLS ME: COMMUNICATION ERROR ... and what may cause this.

GOOGLE - "U0401 ford transit"

AI Overview
The Ford Transit error code U0401 indicates a communication problem between the vehicle's control modules, specifically the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), or with other modules. This usually means there's invalid data being exchanged between these modules, which can affect various vehicle systems.

Common Causes and Troubleshooting:

Power Supply Issues:
Check the battery voltage and the alternator's charging performance. Low voltage or poor charging can cause communication problems.

Fuses:
Inspect the fuses related to the ECM, PCM, or ECU. A blown fuse can disrupt communication.

Wiring Harness:
Examine the wiring harness for any loose connections, corrosion, or damage. A short or open circuit in the wiring can cause the error.

Grounds:
Check the ground connections for the ECM/PCM. A faulty ground can also disrupt communication.

Module Issues:
In some cases, the ECM or PCM itself may be faulty and require replacement or reprogramming.

Additional Information:
CAN (Controller Area Network):
The U0401 code is related to the CAN, a communication protocol that allows different modules to exchange data. Issues with the CAN can trigger the code.

ESP Light:
If the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) light is also on, it can be related to the engine management system fault. The ESP relies on the engine management system for proper functioning.

THIS MAY NOT COME UP WITH FORSCAN, AS IT DELVES DEEPER AND IS BETTER SUITED TO OUR TRANSITS

Note: the ABS system covers a lot of stuff. not just antilock brakes ..

it's your data for speed
it's data for the stability control
and traction control and hill start assist

and your computers will see it as a fault ..and may be a shut down fault

An ABS fault can be:
under inflated tyres,
wrong size tyres one or two different from others
reluctor rings,
or ABS sensor or wiring

forscan lets you monitor wheel sensors in real time ..so helping with diagnostics.

all the best.mark
