Transit custom brake squeal when driving and tyre deformed

Postby ds77 » Sat Jun 28, 2025 4:32 pm

Just wondered if anyone has any ideas before I bite the bullet and go to the garage.. Van is a 2014 transit custom with around 70k miles. its a camper conversion with 18" alloy wheels. For the last 1500 miles or so there has been a squealing noise from the rear right (offside) which seems to happen after a few miles of driving. It is intermittent - often stops when turning a corner and always stops when you brake. Its like very light metal on metal rubbing but is very irritating. Today I decided to take the wheels off to see if it was anything obvious and I've discovered some strange tyre wear on the affected side. The tyre shape looks like the camber on that wheel is off but the tread depth is pretty much the same across the whole tyre. The nearside tyre is normal. There are also cracks in the tread too. I know the camber isn't adjustable on these and there is no obvious accident damage - Ive had the van around 8 years and the problem only started last year.. I was thinking the squeal could be a slightly rubbing brake pad or sticky hand brake cable but wonder if the 2 are now related. How would this tyre wear happen - defective tyre? Ive attached photos below, any ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks

Don't know - chinese ?

There is a date code on them

How old are they?

What's going on with the wheel studs in the middle picture?

Thanks for the reply - they have been repaired as there was a nail through the rubber but weren't driven flat at all. Could a repair cause this..?
They were budget tyres but load rated - date is 0520 which should be fine.
Wheel studs seem ok.

I’m not sure why they are blue but the threads are fine. Just doing some research it seems the tyre repair could cause a deformity in the tyre by damaging the belt. I’ll take it to a tyre shop tomorrow.
Cheers.

When plug repairs are done on steel belted tyres can damage the steel belt when they go into the hole with a reamer before plugging ( doesn't need to be run flat)
THAT TYRE IS FOOKED

Andz327 is completely wrong. It's not fooked. If uou remove it, cut the tyre in half and fold each half away, it will make a nice 80's plant stander.
Its just no good as a vehicle tyre.

I bow to your knowledge of planters.....though cutting a steel belted tyre in half would take a bit of effort, better to slice the back sidewall and turn inside oot

Good luck with that...near impossible to turn them inside oot too..I tried it once nearly 1000 years ago...nearly blew a sphincter trying.
