Found a Spring in sump?

Postby Rogsvan » Thu Apr 04, 2024 7:39 pm

2.2 rwd 2015 van , new to me van so pulled sump to check strainer while changing my oil all good apart from this spring and two rubbers sat in the bottom of the pan. Van runs and drives good , any ideas what could have failed? Oil pump looks good with the bigger spring still in it.
Thanks

the orange rubber things - They are from the underside of the rocker cover .

not sure if you can buy them separately.

rumour has it, they fall out when the engine has a blowing injector seal. !

the spring don't know

There are no pictures anywhere on the net, of what the little spring looks like, that's inside the timing chain tensioner

so cant confirm it, as that ..unless someone with the knowledge here ..says it is it

This thread is about a spring being found (a smaller one) but may be useful to give you ideas.

Thanks for the reply and the offer to chop one up!, looks far to flimsy for a tensioner spring i woulda thought but i usually work on bikes so not to sure what the tensioners are like on these. Some one said oil pressure relief like on the other thread but even that is a much heavyer gauge spring. Pcv valve assembly was suggested not sure what they look like internally ?

They don't have a PCV valve, so it won't be that. They're a petrol engine thing.

Clutching at straws but could it be a valve tensioner spring like in this pic? Or is it smaller?

It's a different engine but just a thought.

Or...it could be that the previous owner was fitting those orange bungs and writing down which holes he had put them in. He might have been so stressed doing this, that he kept clicking the pen he was using to write down the locations. The pen may have been made out of low quality plastic and broken, resulting in the spring striking the previous owner on the top lip below the nose (it really hurts) causing him to drop the remaining orange bungs and letting the spring fall into the engine.

Someone else found these orange bungs far away from where they should be, in an engine strip just over a week ago,. on the m8 forum.

viewtopic.php?f=64&t=227221

that spring is bigger than a biro spring , but smaller than a valve spring

on the parts diagram, i see a tensioner blade for the oil pump chain ..but don't see a spring or any the means for it to make tension ?

I guess you could lift the cover and see if they're missing?

Sorry to bring this up again but I have just got the same on a 2.2 2015 RWD transit. Did anyone find out what the spring is from ?

Thanks
