Postby TM2025 » Wed Aug 13, 2025 2:23 pm

Hi, I searched but couldn't find an answer sorry, asking here now
I have a 1990 automatic, petrol, 1993cc engine, on a Ford Transit campervan travel home,
just picked it up recently, the mechanic who put it through its MOT said he fitted a new timing belt, but the engine was overheating when i was driving (up hills mostly), coolant was fine, no leaks, so i booked it into a mechanic in my hometown in Scotland, he said it needs a new timing belt as the one the mechanic put on is old and worn, does anyone know suppliers in Scotland that i can buy from? any advice is welcome!
Thanks T

Practically any motor factor, or online parts supplier should have the timing belt for the two litre Ford Pinto engine.

I might have one in my garage to give you a part number to search on, I'll have a look :)

That's great thanks, i did a search and found one on halfords! i just spoke to the mechanic who said the timing was out by about 10 degrees and they didn't have the right tool to tune it so had to borrow one, would that make a big difference to the overheating situation? It's been about 30 years since i last drove an automatic so just getting used to it all!

The great thing about this engine is that if the belt breaks, the engine just stops and doesn't destroy itself, so I'm guessing that it's possible to mess up the timing slightly when re-fitting the belt, but starting would be difficult, and overheating is a possibility.

That's good to know thank you! I'm going to pick it up this morning and test it on a few hills!
