Mk 7. Transit.

Postby Trevor jones » Thu Sep 11, 2025 10:56 am

Hi everyone thanks for all your help and advice in advance
Right here goes. A few months back my transit custom van sat around for 3 months doing nothing coz I had a few problems with parts etc
Anyway here’s what I’m asking advice on. ? My van starts and runs very good from cold. But as soon as it gets warm it starts to slaptter it’s like it’s sucking in air etc. ! So I changed the diesel filter. ( nope. All very clean. ). Then I plug in a computer to see if anything else can be wrong and it came up air flow mass censor. So. (. I changed that. 3 times so far. ). Now I hear you say why 3 times. ??? Well I bought 1 and for a few hours it worked fine them bang it started doing it again etc
As soon as you take the air flow mass sensor clip off. It runs like brand new but I got EML , Hill Start. LIGHTS ON DASH
is there anybody who can help me. Please

Your computer as you call it isn't doing enough to inform you of the faults, you're changing the sensor, perhaps there isnt anything wrong with it , .. the sensors job is reporting on the conditions of a fault caused by something else... those faults probably being:
EGR stuck or sticking
Turbo actuator problem
or hole in or leaking boost pipe

Disconnecting the sensor - results on running on default settings for a while.

Forscan

if you have forscan you would have more info than just fault codes.

as regards reading codes

NOTE: you can use forscan to get correct fault codes with proper DETAILED explanation of them - a generic fault code reader may be somewhat misleading, or doesn't work (or we on the forum are unfamiliar with it)_you can see a lot more with forscan. like live running data etc of all systems, everything .. ABS signals, EGR open percentages, pressures, temperatures , graphs

"Forscan" is FREE software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable -- this is just the cable, you need a laptop)
You can join the forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.

So what you saying I should find someone with a proper computer and get them to plug it in and see what they find with it.
If it is the EGR. thing we’re would I find that on my van
Also I cleaned all the pipes out etc when I had my heater plugs changed as I wanted it all clean with no grease everywhere
Many thanks for you help and advice Mark

i was assuming you were calling a code reader a computer ..laptop is all you need with forscan from the link above .. plus a cable. perhaps you already have forscan .. i dont know

The egr valve (exhaust gas recirculation valve) is this thing sticking up to the right in the picture
looked for pic of manifold and egr so you'd know what you are seeing .

You never mention euro 4 or 5, so me guessing here

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/0WIAAOSw ... l1600.webp

and you'd better know what an EGR does and how it works before you attempt to take apart and clean it or replace.

Best description i could find.
