2.2 TDCi Performance engine components?

Postby Hix_ » Sun Oct 19, 2025 3:46 am

Looking at doing some pre-emptive engine work and seriously cosidering just going with a full rebuild. I wondered if there are any performance engine internals on the market, as I've not found anything. As I understand it, the pistions seem to be made from a fairly low grade of chocloate, so they are highest on the list of part to change if possible, rods could be a good option too.
Anyone out there done a decent build, or are people just going down the route of a recon and a chip?

What month of 2016 was it built..?? The 2.0 Panther engine started production 30th of May 2016.

TBH there aren't any perfomance parts for the 2.2 Puma engines unless you get them custom made....their perfomance is essentially at the limit notwithstanding mapping...do not get a "chip"...it just tricks the fuel system into thinking the inlet air is colder than it actually is.

Sorry, using design terminology in my signature and forgot about it. It is a 2015 290. Not sure of the month of build.
I wasn't going to get a chip, I know that they're just a crap one-size-fits-all attempt.
If I did anything, I'd put a Speeduino in and map things properly logging all of the parameters so it didn't start itself.
I was beginning to think that the Puma was a bit of a turd because despite looking extensively I hadn't seen anything by way of aftermarket internals.
I'm wondering though, if there is a market for non-chocolate pistons.
It's tricky trying to work out how safe the engine is to do anything to because the interwebs are full of reports of engines grenading, but you don't know how good the owners have been with regards to oil spec and duration, dodgy chipping and generally abusing their engines from cold for years.
When you say their performance is essentially at the limit, how are you quantifying that? Didn't M-Sport map them to something like 225?
To be honest, I'm not arsed about the power but I would like as flat and tall of a torque curve as I could get.
