are Auto boxes reliable ?

Postby pcatterall » Thu Feb 12, 2026 4:57 pm

We had a transit auto in our first camper conversion and it was great. This was the 'proper' auto just 3 gears ( borg Warner)
We decided to get an auto in our next conversion it was dire!! This was the later type of auto which used a clutch.
It worked ok until I had finished the conversion then it was just repair after repair. In despair we had it converted to manual.
Our third conversion was using a manual box.
Getting older( 84)and considering a fourth ( and last) conversion1 This will be on a SWB, it will be used day to day and we are considering an auto again
( They will surely have sorted them by now !?)
What does the panel think? we will be looking at a 2020 or 2022 model?
Thanks all.

There's hardly any talk here about them . that does not make them more reliable though, its just their rarity here in the UK.

i know that rwd ones are longer lived than fwd drives ones. (that's old design though)

And manufacturers don't recommend an oil change
But the oil change or flush is key to making them last .. which should be done at 50,000 miles intervals or sooner.

Google says it's 10 speed - well that would over-complicate things, I would think that could make it something less reliable to start with.

And put this phrase into google .. and you'll see all you want about reliability issues as when used in other fords. wasn't sorted until 2023

"reliability of ford 10 speed transmission"

all the best.mark
