Rules for active DPF regeneration

Postby RadioSurfer » Wed Feb 18, 2026 11:50 am

Hello,

Although this question relates to a Transit Connect, I'm sure it is relevant to all Fords.

I've looked online, and in this forum but can't find a complete set of rules required by the onboard computer to initiate an active DPF regeneration. My 2020 Transit Connect 1.5L EcoBlue TDCi, Euro 6, engine Z2GA doesn't seem to be performing an active regeneration, and there must be a set of conditions required for this process to start. As far as I have read, and from videos (eg O'Rileys) the conditions seem to be:

Sufficient fuel, ? litres of fuel in tank (min 1/8 tank).
No fault codes.
Engine coolant temperature > 90 centigrade.
Outside ambient temperature > ? centigrade. (As long as the gauge is giving a sensible reading and is connected)
Dpf differential pressure > ? kPa.
Dpf soot levels > 45%, although this is a calculated figure from the above so, may not be a trigger in itself.

Road speed > 40-50 mph (not convinced, I think this is for passive). As I have owned vehicles that will regenerate in town traffic when it is most likely needed.
Revs > 2,500 rpm (not convinced, for same reason above)

Anything missing, can anyone supply figures for the unknown values marked "?" ?

Many thanks

Not owning one of these 1.5s, i have a 2006 connect, non of these things present on mine, i don't really know, so had to look it up ...

So it says in one link that you can manually start it yourself without any plug in diagnostic equipment

Cant remember which link is which now ..
one is how to force it and the other is what goes on in passive regeneration - these are official ford site links:

https://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford ... ldtype=web

https://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford ... ldtype=web

So logic says to me, the fact that you are given the choice to manually start it without diagnostic equipment, tells me , that ford know the system is flawed in the way it should automatically work and have given the customer the ability to do it themselves. otherwise if it was able to work correctly, the override would be hidden/ concealed within the diagnostics .

and .. last few weeks .... raining all the time .. so DPF .. getting cooled by splash .. so - i would think , never reaching the temperature required to start auto regeneration rule comes in.

Thanks Mark,

Interesting read, but my van doesn't give that detailed information about the various states of the dpf, ie no pre-advance warning the dpf is approaching its limit, to allow a "manual clean" by going on a long drive. The first thing I know is an engine warning light, by which time it's too late. Any attempt to then drive and clear the dpf will automatically fail, as active regeneration can't happen when any warning light/fault code has been activated.

I'm hoping to get a full list of all the conditions necessary for active regeneration, then monitor the relevant sensors with something like Forscan whilst driving, to see what's happening or not, and pinpoint the failure.

Otherwise, you can end up with the "it could be this", or "my mate's van had this" approach.

Doesn't sound too difficult, but .....,

Cheers Richard.

Yes difficult .. they will not put the pre warnings on because people who have no idea (almost everyone).. will complain of complexity.

in the USA a company called Banks .. make all sorts of gizmos that wire into the can bus and show all, in a series of gauges .. down your "A" piller right at eye level. some gauges are multifuction .. and you just click through them to display what you require.

it would be very difficult with forscan , to do what you want do, without making it dangerous to drive whilst looking at it

Hi Mark.

Don't worry, I won't be driving with my eyes focused on Forscan. I've never used it, but I was hoping you could record with it, if not I'll get someone to drive.

I remain optimistic I can narrow down on the issue. You have to be optimistic owning a Ford!

Interesting video by the way.

definitely do the proper diagnostics before trying to regen , you can do more harm than good without knowing whats going on first
