Temperature Gauge Reading Beyond High and Off the Scale

Transit connect tddi 2006

Just happened after a restart .. temperature gauge went all the way over and off the scale, then didn't return to resting position once keys were taken out

so its stuck at pointing at south east ...if it was a compass

Cant show pic as phone has decided not to communicate with pc

Engine wasn't hot .. not even at running temperature

Has anyone seen this happen before .. what was it .. how did you sort it

yes, i have disconnected the battery .. still does not return

Could the sensor sender short out and overload the gauge? thus damaging it.

Could possibly be the CHT sensor in the cyl head...reasonably common in Mk6's but I don't know about Connects.

the gauge it permanently stuck pointing south west even with battery disconnected.

sort of important with the hot weather here, nothing compared with Aus im sure , got to ride around now with temperature gauge probes instruments to make sure in this hot weather, i can check it , its peaking at 38c and mostly above 28c

Yeah...we get some silly ambient temps during summer....not unheard of to have several days in the mid 40's C....Even in the middle of winter we rarely see single figures where I am in Brisbane, you could probably count them on one hand....most winter days top out in the mid 20's. Actually quite pleasant.

We will have to wait and see if i have to abandon my trip tomorrow

Don't know if it will go into limp mode because of this

So far cold start engine, fan isn't running .. if the temperature sensor was saying hot ..mmmm then it should be

is it a cluster fault ?

Usually if gauges clock themselves and don't return it's an internal fault.
Depending on the age it may be a straight swap with a second hand unit with no programming required but I'm not specifically familiar with the connects.
The first rule of diagnostics club is, we don't skip plugging it in.

ok thanks airthies .. the clocks sell on ebay for about £50

where's the mileage stored, what if the replacement clock displays less or more miles, like huge difference, if its stored in the clocks .. are there new mot rules concerning this.

i will attempt to remove the dial and reposition .. and look for faults like .. maybe a resistor blew etc

according to Google
Resistors almost always fail by "opening" (their resistance becomes infinite), which would explain why it went full over.

yep would be nice to look at the actual temperature if its possible to read with forscan .. well i have a laptop .. its xp .. not used for years .. not sure if forscan will work on it . not sure if battery will charge .

Again can't comment on connects specifically but the bigger vans mileage is stored in clocks.
Forscan can increase mileage but can't decrease.
Milage discrepancy, abnormal increase or decrease may be noted on MOT but not a fail.
If you're not planning on selling it right away it's not an issue.
My vans gone through several clock swaps all showing different mileages for different reasons and never a bother.
They're All plug n play in the Mk7 at least.

It might be worth having a read up in the Connect section, because I have a feeling that the speedo head is paired with the key chip, but that may only be the TDCi.

Think i'm prepared to live with it until a cluster comes up on ebay for £20, will put a watch on it, ebay will send me info when one comes up at that price, sit back and wait

Today it was pointing south, and went to southwest when it warmed up. tomorrow will probably point the right place .. so one in four cold starts it will be right , there was no limp mode, and it ran perfectly, for 70 miles .. measured temperature with digital; thermocouple .. not running hot, even with today's temperatures.
