Ford p100 pickup1.8 diesel running bad

Postby jimmellor1111 » Tue Dec 06, 2005 11:02 pm

Hi

I bought a g reg ford p100 pickup last week and it has been fine for about 80 miles and has now started running bad loosing power and spluttering. The oil is black would this stop it working properley ? if so how much oli do i need to put in if i do an oil change ? what else would you check as i have never had a diesel motor before.

Thanks Jim

Hi Jim, i would start by changing the diesel filter first, oil wont affect the running but it sounds like it could do with a change, fill to the upper mark on the dipstick, maybe around 5 litres

Hi Jim, welcome to the site, wouldn't you rather have a transit? Have you tried the various cortina.sierra forums out there? Also, where in the country are you, and do you have any pics? Not exactly a transit so not to post here, might be interesting for film work.

The oil being black wouldn't make it run badly, that's normal in older vehicles. Spluttering could be air in the fuel but it probably wouldn't work at all then. Could be dragging up rubbish fron the tank if the last owner let it get low on fuel. Fuel filter change is a good idea - I changed my Sierra one and heaps of pine needles were in the bottom - no wonder it didn't work right! If you do change the fuel filter, be prepared to bleed it at the injectors as the hand priming pumps often don't work too well - make sure you have a good battery and a standby one.

got an idea sierra 1.8s hold about 7litres of oil but do go the fuel filter road first. Then check pump/cam belt timing and valve clearances.
