Glow Plugs

Postby trevkingdon » Thu Dec 29, 2005 12:48 pm

Hi

Is it an easy job to change the Glow plugs on my 1993 Diesel transit.

Mine have given up the ghost just intime for this cold spell.

Thanks for your help

thanks for your help guy's

Think it was the cold this morning- Hooked up to the wifes car when she got home and (plus it was only -2) and after a few minutes of leaving the battery connected it fired up first time.

Maybe I should drop a hot water bottle into overnight and tuck it up with a warm blanket.

(anyone shed any light on why they stopped using glow plugs as it seems a silly thing to do)

Direct injection engines don't require glow plugs, even the engines with glow plugs would still have trouble starting on cold mornings.

Trev, yours will no doubt be a lucas injector pump, there is a cable on these from a thermosensor that works from the cooling system, its on top at the front of the engine, it slackens off as it warms up, make sure its working it gives a bit more diesel when its cold

Also it may help to know that a diesel should be started at full throttle and as soon as it fires up release the throttle! This is not true for modern diesels which have computer controlled injection.

that may be true of starting a diesal transit with out a ECU......but on one of my classic tractors (fordson diesal)its says in a manual i have to start it on half throttle.otherwise excess fuel can build up in the cylinders..
on my van it will start up when cold with just a little throttle.

Yeah that's interesting. My TD engine is certainly computer controlled but I recently got around to reading the Ford user manual (that I bought from Ebay) and says start with the clutch and accelerator fully depressed. I have always started with the clutch down but after have been experimenting with the accelerator recently and it does seem to start easier :? I would have thought the ECU takes care of everything. Hmmmm...

cold starting tip

Postby john leeman » Fri Dec 30, 2005 4:32 pm

Always always press the clutch down and full throttle to start di's. pressing the clutch reduces the drag on the oil in the gear box, even stiffer when cold.
