Welcome mandymoo. I am trying to remember how much an alternator was the last time I bought one, I think it was around the £100 mark, a 2nd had one would of course be at least half that, but you don't know how long it will last. Also, most motor factors will charge a returnable surcharge (deposit) if you don't take the old one in when you buy the new one, as they are usually exchange. Can I ask who has told you you need a new alt? Did you get the battery checked too? Just wanted to make sure they are not trying to sell you something you don't need.......... :D

A genuine ford exchange part will cost you around 120+vat

Make sure the drive splines look ok on the old one when it's removed, if they look worn, you can bet that the brake vacuum pump will also be worn on the interal spines.

I generally get them re-cond for £50-£80.

Where abouts are you? It generally helps to put where you are in your profile, that way people nearer you will be able to tell you the best places to seek out parts.

stupid as it may sound, but ebay is not a bad place to look as there are now so many parts suppliers selling on there due to low over head costs it actually works out cost effective, and also a helpfull guide for you too :)
