Sticky Gear Problem

Postby MrBlueSkye » Fri Jan 13, 2006 11:50 am

HI all, Can anyone put their finger on this one: Back in May I lost fifth gear in my R reg 100 lwb 2.5 diesel. I had the gearbox pulled and a new 5th gear cog put in to replace the original which had sheared from the drive spline. At that time they said that the clutch plate and thrust bearing were fine. Since having the repair done going from 1st to 2nd gear has always been a "few seconds longer than you want" especially when it's cold until I've been driving for a couple of minutes which I assume allows the gear box oil to warm up and thin. Today getting into 1st gear and then second gear has been a bugger and at times I have had to put the clutch pedal down again to engage those gears. Somethings wrong somewhere.
Has anyone got a suggestion as to what the problem might be.

unfortunatly the gearbox will most probly allways be like that from now on! :( the mt75 is good or bad , most have abit notchy on the gear change! they are a pian! a frend of mine spent nearly £400 getting his sorted out and its still the same! the best thing is to try and live with it or replace the box with a good one! :?

Yep, mine is exactly like you describe. :(
When cold changing from 1st to second is a horrible gear crunching experience. It's enough to make you want an automatic
Adjusting the clutch made quite a difference for me.

If the clutch pedal is level with the brake pedal or there abouts, it's not a clutch adjustment issue. It's a good place to start though :)

Did a dealer do the transmission repair?

If the clutch adjustment is OK, I'd suspect a couple of possibles

1st and 2nd sycnro rings/hub are worn.

or

Incorrect assembly of the transmission which has increased the preload on the gear train. Sometimes slackening off the input shaft guide sleeve and removing the input shaft securing circlip and then resetting the countershaft bearings before rebuilding with the correct torque will help. As will setting the rear flange nut to the correct torque to ensure the mainshaft is all the way back in it's bearing.

or

If they aren't a dealer, did they use the correct oil, the MT75 doesn't like Extreme Pressure oil

Mt's use a red oil very very similar to ATF.

Not anymore m8

It's brown now and smells nasty :(

The old oil was a red synthetic mix, the new one is 75w90 as used in almost all the other ford transmissions.

We used to have loads of fun with the red oils!

Type 9 5 speeds had a red oil with wasn't the same blend as ATF, and MT75 had a red oil which wasn't the same as either of the other 2.

Didn't take long for the box to explode with the wrong oil.

Hmmm, OK.
Well this is confusing
So what gearbox oil should I have in my '97 LWB?
More importantly where do I get it?

The simple answer to that is
Go to your local ford parts dealer, they'll give you the correct oil as listed on ecat or on microcat.

Hi all the update to my original posting (which I note was Friday the 13th) is that something is definately not right with this gearbox. I'm now having big problems getting it into any gear at all, and then the next minute it will go into gear. Example I drove 1/2 mile to the shops this morning and coming back could only get 2nd and strugglingly into third. On parking it wouldn't go into reverse but after lots of buggering about / clutch in out / trying different gears finally went into reverse, and then went straight into 1st gear to level the van up. Any advances on the advice you have allready given will be greatly appreciated. The clutch pedal is level with the brake pedal.

I'd take it back to who ever rebuilt the gear box!

Hmmm,
My van is usually difficult to get into reverse. I have to change into other gears and roll a bit to get it in. Even then it sometimes pops out as I feed in the power. The first time it happened I cr***ed myself, it makes massive bang exactly like reversing into a BMW!
I have had success with other gearboxs flushing them out to remove any swarf but it's never a good sign when bits of metal come out :?
Nighthawk's your man I think!
