Chassis cab lengthening

Postby mike730 » Sat Jan 21, 2006 9:04 pm

I want to add about three foot into my 96 crew cab chassis cab to increase the wheelbase before I add a recovery body,I was wondering if anyone knows of where I can get hold of some fabricated sections that will overlap the original chassis sections.

CHASSIS LENGTH

Postby john leeman » Sat Jan 21, 2006 10:00 pm

I AM SURE YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO INCREASE YOUR CHASSIS MORE THAN 1/2 WOUR WHEEL BASE. CHECK FIRST, GOOD LUCK

Hi Mike, I am not too sure about Mk3s, but you may still be able to get the extention plates from Ford. When they are done as an option, the standard chassis were taken off the line and cut then re jioned with big plates, we have 4 Mk2s (earlier than yours) that are Ford extra LWB, and one with a specially built chassis by Chassis Services of Leighton Buzzard. The later chassis (and I am not sure where yours comes) had the chassis set further back on the standard LWB chassis, then the extention is added at the back. If that's the case with yours, it should be easy to get the extention plates and retro fit them. The key thing is is where your rear axle is. Is it at the very back of the chassis, or is there some chassis behind it?

hI MIKE

ITS NOT REALY EASY IVE DONE 1 BEFORE I STARTED CUTTING BEHIND THE CAB ABOUT 8INCH HANGING THEN PUT NTERNAL PEASE IN, 18 TO 20 INCH INTO THE CHASSIS AT THE CAB THEN YOU SLEEVE IT SAME AGAIN WHEN YOU JOIN THEM THEN YOU GOT TO REMEMBER TO EXTEND THE PROPSHAFT & HANDBRAKE CABLE& BRAKE PIPES. I CANT EXPLAIN IT ALL ON COMPUTER ITS TOO TECHNICAL

I,m going to cut it about 8" behind cab and sleeve the chassis internally using 50mm x 100mm box top and bottom ,then i'm going to plate up the outside of the chassis.Handbrake, brake line & exhaust easy to sort, propshaft will be a bit harder to do but got a few props to try.Just put the tranny in the garage, should have it cut in half soon.
