thick smoke on cold mornings

Postby swivelo » Tue Jan 24, 2006 10:31 am

hello
I have an R reg deisel tipper 190 lwb transit and I know absolutely nothing about engines, trucks, transits or anything much.

I bought the motor second hand a few months ago and all was well. Recently, with the cold weather, I've been experiencing some trouble when I first start her up. After about three or four minutes driving, and when stopped at a junction, the engine suddenly revs up and makes a kind of clattering sound. This is accompanied by extremely thick grey smoke billowing from the exhaust pipe! This morn it happened and then conked out completely. I was able to restart it after 5 mins and about 6 attempts.

Can anybody tell me what it might be?

it could be the fuel injection pump not a lot of good..
the clattering sounds like the engine running away a bit.as maybe the governor is breaking up inside the pump..or fuel is just being pump into the engine making a sort of loud pinking sound..not good either..

cheers for response mate.

So you don't think allowing the engine to warm up (idle for a while) for 5 mins or so before I get going would do much to help?

Have a look also at the post called 'Screaming diesel engine (& bus driver)' in case it's similar to that.

bloody good call morag!

it sounds very similar except my problem only occurs first thing on very cold mornings and is absolutely fine thereafter.

I will, however, look into some of those suggestions!

I have had this before too, and you don't always notice it happen at other times if you driving along, such as on a motorway. However when it happend to me in Paris and I obscured the Place De La Concorde with the smoke I knew it was time to do something about it! i drove me and the machanic mad, and resulted in a near full strip down of the engine. It turned out it was some oil junction inside the engine that was giving up, occasionally dripping oil into the bore which was being burned off and clearing till the next time. The engine was about the same age as this one too, we still have it and it's running well and hasn't happened again.
