It's always a bit worrying having spare wires floating about the place but to be honest if the van is running fine, you don't have any warning lights on and arn't consuming loads of fuel then I wouldn't worry about it. :)
Just make sure it isn't going to foul anything by floping about or short anything out (did you measure the volts on it?) and carry on as normal!

if it's converted could it have been a rev counter wire, from the alternator ?

ah! just a stab in the dark

i have a massive bunch of spare wires, not too worried about em, as long as the motor runs and the wires are dead or insulated. :)

re loose wire

Postby simon howard » Sun Feb 05, 2006 10:35 pm

has your van had injector pump changed?
the wire you have there is for cold start device that was operated from a sender unit that was mounted on a plate on side of engine just in front of fuel filter, when pumps were changed they didnt all use this electric cold start device so wire was just left off, but make sure its insulated as its a ign feed to it.

did you ever decide if this was diesel from new, or a conversion. The heater controls are the giveaway. Petrols have two controls, diesels have three. That is, if you have sliding controls there will be three sliders (diesel), if you have a dial there will be three settings (diesel).

Not too sure about older pumps but....
If you are refering to the cold start 'flame' device, then it was only fitted to vehicles that had to start in extreme cold. And by extreme I mean like minus 20! Not too much danger of that here. But with global warming....
