As Joe said if you jump the two battery posities together with a lead then you aren't endangering the relay and wiring but you do have to open the bonnet and put it on!

It's rated at 180A. That's plenty big enough for charging and for boosting your starer battery if it's on the edge of flat. I wouldn't want to use it every time if your stater battery failed completely. The starter can draw 400-500A or more! . It'll get you out of trouble though, if you fit the overide switch.
