First transit, first post, first time on here. found the site last night after struggling all day to start my '96 2.5 swb transit! not the most knowledgable in the mechanical side of life but plan on becoming so with the help of some mates and hopefully this forum?? after reading a few old posts i tried charging the battery (640A heavy duty) overnight still no luck!? van just drains all charge? what next? had a mate/RAC bloke check the van over just after i bought it and he said all seemed ok. starter motor/alternator. what could it be? any ideas welcomed and much appreciated!!!! cheers in advance??

Hi, welcome to the forum!
First things first, does theengine turn over? How fast? The 2.5Di requires quite a fast turn over to start. Is there any fuel in it? (I have to ask :P )
The most likely cause is the fuel stop valve on the back of the injection pump is not opening, hence no fuel to the pump. This could be for several reasons, it's just failed, a fuse has blown, the wire has fallen off/broken.
Alternatively, if you have one, the fuel lift pump could have failed. Its at the back of the engine, low down on the passenger side.
Are you still getting all the ignition lights on the dash when you turn the key?

i've had the van since early december. it's been runnning fine apart from when the temp drops below freezing. put a new battery in just before xmas due to cold start probs.
it does turn over quite quickly at first but slows as it's being drained but i suppose that pretty obvious :?
as for fuel- over half a tank :D
ignition lights are all lit as norm?

woohoo!!!
success!! just gave it a boost off a mates 2.0 clio got it running.
don't want this problem every time a hard freeze sets, couldn't work yesterday? i did notice a very small amount of smoke coming from what i think is the starter motor yeterday after the engine had been repeatedly cranked for quite a while? would this be just down to the fact of too much stress being put on it or could it be fooked??

I would say change the starter. What kind does it have at the mo, BIG this wieghing about 10lb or something that looks like it came off a fiesta? The former are best, but are getting hard to find, the latter is what is being sold now (correctly) but don't seem to last, can't think why.......

Hello Witmore

I have a similar problem and wondered if you have had any luck solving this problem. I have also replaced the battery, alernator and starter but it appears that the battery needs recharging regulary. The ignition lights and so on are on in the dash but the sarter will not turn over.

In hope

Even if you don't need it, grab it.
The minute you do need it, it'll be gone.

Check out the connections! A bad connection will give your symptoms. Check the battery connections and the starter and check all the earths are good and clean. Ive had a loose earth cable to the starter and it was sparking and smoking eventualy burning the plastic on the cables.
