2.9v6 Differential Quiery

Postby PENDLEMOTORCYCLES » Sat Feb 11, 2006 11:31 am

I have a mk3 1993 Transit minibus, single wheel axle, which was origianally fitted with a 2ltr pinto. I have recently converted it to a 2.9 efi v6 out of a granada (with aq few mod`s). This is my daily transport and works van. Everthings spot on now after a few minor set backs, apart from the differential. The van rev`s quite hard at 80mph and rev`s out just over 110mph. Can you suggest a differential that would lower the rpm at 80 and also give me a better top speed. P.s. there are no problems with power, the engine is making around 300bhp with n.o.s. Cheers, Jon. 8)

if you look at your axle there should be a tag on it that will tell you your ratio have a look!
the tallest you can get is a 3.89:1 they are ery rare the next is a 4.1:1 they are also rare!!
another option is to fit bigger tyres!!
what gearbox are you using?
:D
also any chance of some piccs :?:

Origianally fitted with a mt75 gearbox out of granada, with a home made remote gearshift, but didn`t quite do the job. Found an ambulance and used the box and adaptor plate off that + engine mounts and a few other parts. The wheels are weller landrover redrilled to fit and is using 205/60-16 but could do with higher profile tyres. No tag on diff casing, pictures to follow.

look forward to the piccs 8) sounds great!!

205/60x16s not a bad profile mine has 205/55x16s on the front and they look a little thin but i chose them cos they had the same radius as the 185R14Cs i had on before!

you dont say if she is 6 stud or 5 ??????? . thjere is another option find a erly mk3 and fit the tube type axle , this will take a capri 3.44 diff, but all this is hard to find now ,so if you are lucky 4.11 will be the only option if you can find one! if not you will have to go to a diff firm that will be able to fit you a 3.9 or 4.11 crownwheel and pinion! bust this will cost! :)

It`s a five stud axle. Capri diff sounds good, should be able to pick up an l.s.d. unit. :D

 mate i think you missunder stood me, you will need a tube type rear axle to fit the capri diff ,these are very rare as were normaly only fitted to 1.6 popular mk,3s around 86-88 ,even if you fine one you will still have to mod the axle caseing so the crownwheel will fit in it! a 3.44 ratio just fits but 3.09 will need a mod i belieave! hope this helps you! :)

you have done what i had done to my old chassis cab(Rest In Pieces now) but i used the granny auto box and the 2.9 v6...in the transit which was a twin wheel 190...at 80mph was about 4500 rpm but was quiet as i put the sound deadoning stuff from a diesal on the bulkhead it made a lot of diffrence at least i could talk with a raised voice in stead of shouting at my gf when we went out.

No real problems with noise inside, could just do with more top speed. I`m due a race with a new generation transit soon, and i don`t want to loose. No problems with handleing cause it goes as quick sideways as it does in a striaght line. Just want speed!!!!!!!!!!
